The salad

We have been busy refurbishing Ausma’s kitchen, hence the silence. Under three layers of wallpaper we discovered the Russian Blue, variations of which always seem more like green to me.

Here is the salad recipe I earlier promised:

  • green spring cabbage sliced thin
  • a bit of grated carrots
  • oil
  • citric acid
  • salt, sugar
  • mix and squeeze well
  • let stand for a couple of hours

Cemetery party

I had never gone to one before. The annual party of Matru cemetery near Kapsede took place today. I’ve heard some parties attract crowds carrying snacks and drinks. Compared, this event was pretty dry, except that some invisible witty force started fiddling on and off the synthesizer loudspeakers halfway through a hymn. This was just after the priest had remarked that we cannot take our TV-sets and computers with us when it is time to go.

Dobele ekstra

Lightning

This is the tree near Kapsede school that was hit by a lightning last Sunday. That’s Lene standing next to the tree.

Kapsede

After Midsummer, during our four-hour nightly drive from south to Dobele we met a deer, four hares and nine red foxes, one of them carrying prey in its jaws. The next day we continued to Kapsede near Liepaja. Here are a few of landscapes from Kapsede village.

The log piles left over from last winter. This is the main heating system for the school and some of the houses around.

The school is under renovation.

Towards south

On Monday we left Riga and headed south along river Daugava.

North from Daugavpils there is a peculiar spot where the river piles sand into dunes. That’s where we spent the Midsummer Fest, at Inese’s and Atis’s place.

To cross the river you either drive up to Jekabpils and take the bridge or use one of the ferryboats. In this panorma the ferryman is explaining the vessel’s mechanics for Janis.

Riga (midsummer)

The Street

Riga, June 2008.

The Zoo

A ceremony was held Friday night to mark construction for the new National Library.

The sun let its last rays fall upon the soaked site.

Mind you, in the afternoon it was pouring while we strolled the Riga zoo. I learned that the crocodile had died recently. Janis said, though, that it had looked dead already for years.

Green again

First day in Riga. It was time to think about food again. We went to the market.

Windy

So we made our journey from Helsinki to Riga. The very strong wind made the old car feel somewhat wobbly amidst the Kamikaze-BMW’s. If the Baltic driving may be a bit mad, here people do know how to make great salads! One day I will ask my wife to publish a salad recipe on this blog. Here is an example from Pärnu where we stopped at a sea-side pizza house. On their terrace was playing only computer generated adaptations of Andean tunes.

Waste

Our garbage house in early spring. By now it has been replaced by cylindrical deep tanks made in Nokia city.

If Nokia were a place…

My exhibition was installed and opened on June 10th in Nokia city backed up with three accordions and triangle sandwiches. Meanwhile in the city centre, the Vietnamese owner of the Chinese restaurant had served their Buddha statue with tea and bisquits.

Hanko

A couple of weeks ago we spent a night in Hanko, the most southern city of Finland. From our freshly red-lit room we made our way to say hello to the Baltic Sea.
