Kapsede

After Midsummer, during our four-hour nightly drive from south to Dobele we met a deer, four hares and nine red foxes, one of them carrying prey in its jaws. The next day we continued to Kapsede near Liepaja. Here are a few of landscapes from Kapsede village.

The log piles left over from last winter. This is the main heating system for the school and some of the houses around.

The school is under renovation.

Towards south

On Monday we left Riga and headed south along river Daugava.

North from Daugavpils there is a peculiar spot where the river piles sand into dunes. That’s where we spent the Midsummer Fest, at Inese’s and Atis’s place.

To cross the river you either drive up to Jekabpils and take the bridge or use one of the ferryboats. In this panorma the ferryman is explaining the vessel’s mechanics for Janis.

The Zoo

A ceremony was held Friday night to mark construction for the new National Library.

The sun let its last rays fall upon the soaked site.

Mind you, in the afternoon it was pouring while we strolled the Riga zoo. I learned that the crocodile had died recently. Janis said, though, that it had looked dead already for years.

Puzzled

It has been suggested we visit the Riga Zoo today.

Green again

First day in Riga. It was time to think about food again. We went to the market.

Windy

So we made our journey from Helsinki to Riga. The very strong wind made the old car feel somewhat wobbly amidst the Kamikaze-BMW’s. If the Baltic driving may be a bit mad, here people do know how to make great salads! One day I will ask my wife to publish a salad recipe on this blog. Here is an example from Pärnu where we stopped at a sea-side pizza house. On their terrace was playing only computer generated adaptations of Andean tunes.

The Bridge

In summer 2006 the Karosta bridge was run over by a tanker just before the bridge’s 100th Anniversary preparations.

To Latvia

On Wednesday I travel to Latvia where I will continue working on my two ongoing Baltic projects. One of them, Relating Latvia was exhibited in April in Helsinki: from this on the process will most likely begin finding a new shape. Riga often is our first stop where our family is hosted by the wonderful Vineta.
